DESIGN

Artist Steven Haulenbeek expertly crafts these unique chandeliers made from resin-bonded sand. Bonded sand, an important component in the casting process, is ordinarily a disposable material, compacted into large blocks to create single-use molds.

Each chandelier is therefore one-of-a-kind, created using a subtractive process akin to marble sculpting. After a block has been carved, shaped and textured, a resin is applied to the form, seeping into its outer layers. Once cured, a process of excavation separates the uncured sand from the sculpted form, to reveal the hard-shelled object.
